Hi,

Please try this procedure:

1. Upgrade to ALSA version 1.0.21 by following these instructions:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

2. Reboot your pc

3. Open a terminal and edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as follows:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

When the file is open, add the following 5 lines to the end of the file after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"

options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

4. Save,close and reboot

This will probably only give sound through the laptop speakers, but not via the headphones. Still, better than no sound at all.

Hope it helps.

Regards,

Mark

Your ALSA is not working, because your ALSA driver was NOT upgraded to version 1.0.21

ALSA driver is still on version 1.0.18, while ALSA library is on version 1.0.21

You can check this yourself, if you take a look at the URL you just sent:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=c6e1967fdc0a6dc2a6e0379d1a612ad121e62a92

!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.18 -> should be version 1.0.21, but it is not
Library version: 1.0.21
Utilities version: 1.0.21

The problem you are encountering, is displayed here:

checking for directory with kernel source... ./configure: line 5050: cd: /lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/build: No such file or directory

So you first need to install the kernel headers and source code for kernel 2.6.28-15 before using the sudo ./configure command

Please send FULL output of following command:

apt-cache search 2.6.28

In this specific case, I do not see a good reason for you to reinstall Ubuntu 9.04

But I need detailed information on why the last 4 aptitude install commands failed (according to your answers)

At least make sure that the following command is executed and that it is successfully installed, even if linux-source-2.6.28 is not installed correctly:

sudo aptitude install linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic

Try the following:

sudo aptitude purge linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic
sudo aptitude install linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic
sudo aptitude reinstall linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic
ls -lart /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic

Please send output of these 4 commands.

If the last command still gives the error "no such file or directory", then I think you have a corrupt install and need to reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 from a LiveCD session

1. Upgrade to ALSA version 1.0.21 by following these instructions:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

2. Reboot your pc

3. Open a terminal and edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as follows:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

When the file is open, add the following 5 lines to the end of the file after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"

options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

4. Save,close and reboot

This will probably only give sound through the laptop speakers, but not via the headphones. Still, better than no sound at all.
