Hi,
Please try this procedure:
1. Upgrade to ALSA version 1.0.21 by following these instructions:
http://
2. Reboot your pc
3. Open a terminal and edit /etc/modprobe.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
When the file is open, add the following 5 lines to the end of the file after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
4. Save,close and reboot
This will probably only give sound through the laptop speakers, but not via the headphones. Still, better than no sound at all.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Mark

Your ALSA is not working, because your ALSA driver was NOT upgraded to version 1.0.21
ALSA driver is still on version 1.0.18, while ALSA library is on version 1.0.21
You can check this yourself, if you take a look at the URL you just sent:
http://
!!ALSA Version
!!------------
Driver version: 1.0.18 -> should be version 1.0.21, but it is not
Library version: 1.0.21
Utilities version: 1.0.21

But I need detailed information on why the last 4 aptitude install commands failed (according to your answers)

Try the following:
sudo aptitude purge linux-headers-
sudo aptitude install linux-headers-
sudo aptitude reinstall linux-headers-
ls -lart /usr/src/
Please send output of these 4 commands.
If the last command still gives the error "no such file or directory", then I think you have a corrupt install and need to reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 from a LiveCD session

Please try this procedure instead:
0. Reinstall Ubuntu 9.04 from a LiveCD session - do a clean install of ubuntu 9.04!
1. Upgrade to ALSA version 1.0.21 by following these instructions:
http://
2. Reboot your pc
3. Open a terminal and edit /etc/modprobe.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
When the file is open, add the following 5 lines to the end of the file after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
4. Save,close and reboot
This will probably only give sound through the laptop speakers, but not via the headphones. Still, better than no sound at all.
