Hi,

Please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy&paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word cat and ENDS with the word snd. So, please copy&paste the ENTIRE command below into a Terminal. Press enter. Then enter your normal user's password (no stars will be shown) when sudo asks for password and then press enter again.

cat /proc/asound/cards; sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk alsa-utils flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound; asoundconf list; aplay -l; sudo lshw -C sound; ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn; sudo which alsactl; lsmod | grep snd

Step 3

Please post results (copy&paste terminal output) in this thread

Step 4

Open gnome-alsamixer (which was just installed using the long command above) and unmute the "surround" channel in gnome-alsamixer so that you can finally hear sound on the speakers

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Mark

Hello Tom, I did fallow this one
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure.

Hi Mark, even with your procedure I cant get sound via the speakers.

The following is the result since I'd paste the code until the end.

-------------------------

marcel@marcel-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards; sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk alsa-utils flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound; asoundconf list; aplay -l; sudo lshw -C sound; ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn; sudo which alsactl; lsmod | grep snd

Did you open gnome-alsamixer and unmute the "surround" channel in gnome-alsamixer ? Make sure to increase the volume for the surround channel and other volume channels as well.

Hi,

Your pc is probably experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/406095

Please try this solution procedure:

1. Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

2. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

3. and add these lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

# So you need to go into the alsa-base.conf file and then add the following lines at the end of it.

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=5stack
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

4. Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

5. reboot and retest sound

6. In the gnome-alsamixer Mixer control panel, make sure to UNMUTE all channels and increase the volume on all channels

7. If it still does not work, please try one of the following model options instead (replacing 5stack as model option):

 STAC9227/9228/9229/927x
   ref Reference board
ref-no-jd Reference board without HP/Mic jack detection
   3stack D965 3stack
   5stack D965 5stack + SPDIF
   dell-3stack Dell Dimension E520
dell-bios Fixes with Dell BIOS setup

You will need to reboot and retest sound after every change to the alsa-base.conf file

Regards,

Mark

This is frustrating. I tried every option and these kick out ALSA. Cant get it done. I cant understand what happened. I use to work on Intrepid and sound worked fine. Please give me more options. I really appreciate your help. And I'ĺl keep trying.

Sorry my english. Is not the best.

Hi

Yes it is frustrating but i think it's a bug with 9.04 that is probably being worked on right now. Have you visited the bug-report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/407790
and tried what has been suggested there?

At the top right-hand corner of each bug-report is a link "This bug doesn't affect me", if you click on that it gives you a chance to change that to "This bug affects me too". Doing that bumps the bug-report a bit to let the developers know it's not just 1 person suffering from this. It would be good to do this to both bug-reports.

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Ps Don't worry about your English. It's fine.

Thank You Tom.

Its done! and thanks for your patience.

You're welcome :)
Hopefully Mark might be able to help really fix the problem or perhaps one of the developers will finally manage some wizardry to fix this as they do. It does take a bit of time sometimes and hardware manufacturers try to "stack the deck" against them but somehow they usually manage something eventually :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,

I am surprised that Kermiac's solution at

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/406095

does not solve your sound issue. He is using the same hardware and same version of Ubuntu as you are. And the model=5stack solution works for him...

Did you put the following 5 lines into the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file and then reboot and retest sound?

options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=5stack
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

Kind regards,

Mark

If that does not work, try this small modification:

Remove the line

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

from the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file and save the change

Add the line

options snd-hda-intel model=5stack

to the /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

file.

Then reboot and retest sound.

You have the 64 bit version of Ubuntu installed. My final suggestion is for you to install the 32-bit version of Ubuntu instead and then try my last alsa-base.conf suggestions again.

Please don't shoot me if it does not help ;-)

Perhaps test the 32bit version as a LiveCd before installing it properly
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Maybe install the 32bit version alongside the 64bit to have a dual-boot (or multi-boot) with both different versions of Ubuntu.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
This guide can help a little but you might be better asking about dual-booting 2 versions of Ubuntu as a separate question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

If this doesn work then watch under your bed every night since tonight........ IĹL KILL YOU!!! LOL ;) jajjajajajja

just to confirm.

alsa-base.conf

options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=5stack

--------------------------------------
options.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=5stack

Is it?

Hi Marcel,
I had exactly the same problem with exactly the same hardware as you. Now that you have done a fresh install of Jaunty, all you should need to do is edit you /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, unmute a few channels in alsamixer & set everything to "pulseaudio" in System --> Preferences --> Sound.

See my bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/406095/comments/48

I added "options snd-hda-intel model=5stack" to the end of my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. I also unmuted several channels (surround, side, LFE, IEC958, etc - see attached pic in original bug report) using alsamixer.

After following that procedure you should have everything working except the 2 bi-directional internal mic's (on either side of the webcam).

Another bug report to watch is:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/407790

That bug report is regarding testing in Karmic.

Hi Marcel,
There are a couple of small differences in the last 4 lines of your alsa-base.conf. See Below for a copy of my alsa-base.conf.

# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2
install sound-slot-3 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-3
install sound-slot-4 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-4
install sound-slot-5 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-5
install sound-slot-6 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-6
install sound-slot-7 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-7

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above generic modules
install snd /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-ioctl32 ; /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq ; }
#
# Workaround at bug #499695 (reverted in Ubuntu see LP #319505)
install snd-pcm /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-pcm-oss ; : ; }
install snd-mixer /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-mixer $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-mixer-oss ; : ; }

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above sound card driver modules
install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-emu10k1-synth ; }
install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-seq ; }

# Load saa7134-alsa instead of saa7134 (which gets dragged in by it anyway)
install saa7134 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install saa7134 $CMDLINE_OPTS && { /sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist saa7134-alsa ; : ; }

# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard

options snd-hda-intel model=5stack

Please remove the following 3 lines from the end of your alsa-base.conf:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

Or you can delete all of the text from your alsa-base.conf, replace it with mine (above) then save the file.

After you reboot you should hopefully have your sound configured correctly.

Good Luck :)

Hello Mitch.

I'm using your conf.

In fact it works, but if I plug the second front jack for the headset the speakers stop working and just back when I turn the mic as an out line. Even the first front headset jack does not work

What's your ALSA version? I had update to this one:

marcel@marcel-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.19.
Compiled on Sep 4 2009 for kernel 2.6.28-15-generic (SMP).
marcel@marcel-laptop:~$

Also would like to know if you have the same kernel version.

Thank you

Hi Marcel.

I am using the ALSA version from the Ubuntu repositories.

mitch@mitch-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3.
mitch@mitch-laptop:~$

I am also running the standard updated Ubuntu kernel

mitch@mitch-laptop:~$ uname -a
Linux mitch-laptop 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18 18:40:08 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
mitch@mitch-laptop:~$

Using the alsa-base.conf file from my post above, I have sound output from all internal speakers & the 2nd headphone jack.
The 1st headphone jack & the dual omni-directional microphones (located either side of the webcam) are not functional.

Hope this info helps

Hi :)

If this is still a problem then please re-post this as a new question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+addquestion
perhaps also at
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Launchpad can only handle most recently asked questions and often the Answers Team races through all the shortest questions first so when you re-post please keep it very brief. You can always copy&paste this link back to this question so that people can see the detail you gave here
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+question/77735

When i was answering questions in here it seemed the best answers were
given when the question was posted just as americans were getting back
from work. This was weird because most of the answerers lived in Europe
or Asia at that time lol.

Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
