no sound recording capability--pressing record either does nothing or kills sound recorder

using jaunty on ubuntustudio 64-bit switched from rt kernel to 2.6.28-14 generic because of sirq-tasklet problems freezing my system. Everything works great now except can't get mic working in any app...and sound recorder doesn't even try to listen
