alsa sound repair

Asked by Vikram Dhillon

Hi folks,
Alright so I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and Ubuntu 9.04, my kernel is 2.6.28-13-generic and I just did sudo apt-get update. Here is my problem, I have a custom sound that plays on my gdm and one when the login is successful but just today, when I logged on the sound played and after that when into my system I couldn't play any other sound. My sound card is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

So what's the going on, why can't I play any sound like songs or some other videos. I went to system-preferences-sound and then changed the playback properties to OSS (Open Sound System) and then it seemed to work but when I change things to ALSA it doesn't work not even in the testing pipeline. I also saw this in the log file viewer:

Jul 6 19:38:11 vikram-laptop pulseaudio[5005]: alsa-util.c: Error opening PCM device hw:0: Device or resource busy

Jul 6 19:38:11 vikram-laptop pulseaudio[5005]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-sink" (argument: "device_id=0 sink_name=alsa_output.pci_8086_284b_sound_card_0_alsa_playback_0 tsched=0"): initialization failed.

I experienced this once before when I was doing haartraining and the program went into a loop for 6 hours and I didn't attend the program, I thought it is doing something but anyways please help me out......

Vikram

Also when I go to Could not open audio device for playback. HDA Intel STAC92XX it says the following:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Could not open audio device for playback.

Should I just do a fresh install...........

Only Sound Playback fails on ALSA and the sound capture works just fine with ALSA
