No sound on HDA Intel VT1708S (Asus K50IJ)

Asked by Sasa Vilic

I have no sound on my laptop Asus K50IJ with Intel HDA VT1708S sound card.

If I change all devices to OSS in System->Preferences->Sound I get no sound.

If I try alsa, I get following message:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert !
audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=char:
Could not open audio device for playback

Here is output from alsa-info.sh from my computer:

I have exactly the same problem.
I remember that there is also a message in dmesg, pulseaudio complains something about alsa-util. Tonight I'll try to investigate more precisely.

please, let me know if you have found the solution

best regards

This codec is not know for having any model options for it, another user reported a similar issue. with this:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/393523

I would join this: http://mailman.alsa-project.org/mailman/listinfo/alsa-devel and provide your alsa-info report along
with your issues. also you can research here for other users reports (if any) http://<email address hidden>

you could add to this report with apport-collect -p alsa-base 750006 it will pull in files that are
helpful for the dev's in analyzing your system.

additionally there have been reports of users finding solutions by upgrading to the latest kernel however be aware
it might cause you to have issues with your graphics card and you need to be prepared to deal with that if you upgrade
the kernel.

i instructed a user with the same codec to use apport collect -p alsa-base 75006 and he got directed to here:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/k3d/+bug/75006
He was not able to update with the collected data, I hope someone will look into this and fix this so reporting can
go to the right bug number, am now recommending using this bug to report new issues with using the apport-collect
command until this is fixed. to here https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/393523

thaks a lot!
unfortunately even with the audio driver alsa 1.0.20 does not work. I read and tried this,
http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7482474

but maybe alsa 1.0.20 does not solve the problem. I will Try a few distro that already uses this component, but now no solution.

already test this solution. The problem is not solved with alsa 1.0.20 which I already installed. I have some problem with ubuntu alpha 2 (9.10) with alsa 1.0.20. Many people think they can solve the problem with alsa 1.0.20 but this is wrong. Tell the developers that have not solved the problem, please.
A possible solution maybe is in Limpus a version of Linux made by Asus. Maybe is possibile take here driver by source code ande put in Ubuntu. I can help you do this, but I'm not a programmer

hey guys.

I have ASRock A780GXH/128M motherboard, and this sound chip on it.

Problem is that bass is much weaker then on the my old motherboard(4 years old).

It gets little better in equalizer, but it still pretty much sucks.

Can you help with this problem?
