No sound after update (but not sure it's related)

Asked by Benoit Malet

Hello !

Yesterday I had sound, now I don't ...

What happened between yesterday and today : I updated like a lot of us to linux-2.6.20-16
(last thing before reboot was updating, first thing after reboot was surfing the web, then trying sound)

BUT :
- I have no sound anymore if I use older kernel too
- I have no sound anymore on my LFS residing on the same machine

INFO :
- lspci gives proper information (Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI [1274:5880])
- dmesg shows no error (and gives proper information on ALSA using my sound card)
- ALSA might not be the cause, as my LFS has an old 1.0.11r1 (built in custom kernel, not changed between yesterday and today)
- the only common point between Ubuntu and LFS is grub (which seem to be well configured)
- passing pci=routeirq to the kernel won't help
- alsamixer shows that it's not muted
- It is not a permission issue, as playing as root won't change anything

I'm a bit puzzled ... Has anyone an idea ???

Thanks for your time !

Regards,
Benoît

(Can't test on proprietary system, has I don't have one ... Will try to test on LiveCD while waiting for your input ;))

Can we really rule out an hardware failure?

I don't know (of course I hope so ...)

Shouldn't we see errors in dmesg or in lspci if that was the case ??

Not necessarily. Also, cables and power supplies are hardware ;)

Cables have been verified twice ...

Hope I won't have to buy a new one ...

Is there some test you can think of ?

Thanks for your time ...

(I think I won't be able to post during some time ... Maybe I'll physically test it with a multimeter ...)

The only reliable test I can think of is to test it with another OS, but this you have done already.
Maybe you want to try with a LiveCD?

Hello !

This was indeed hardware failure (or PEBCAK, who knows ;)) ... Now sound has come back, PC just needed some more sleep, now it's fine (but I guess it won't last long)

Thanks again for your time and advices !

Benoît

I have exactly the same issue: I had sound and suddenly after update I have no sound anymore.
BUT I am sure it's not a hardware failure, because:
1) I can produce sound on other OSes
2) If I change my sound preferences under Ubuntu, I can successfully hear the test sound using OSS.

You'll say: use OSS then.
I'd use it, but it doesn't work... I can hear the test sound, but that's all that I can hear. Normal applications still don't produce sound :(

No sound even if I boot with the previous kernel.

I am experiencing the same problem.
I updated the kernel from 2.6.20-15 to 2.6.20-16, and now I have no sound.
All the symptoms are like those described in the original question. I get no sound even if using the older kernel, dmseg shows no error, alsa is not muted.

My laptop is a lenovo R60e. The sound card info from lspci is: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

I have to take back my last comment. Today I have sound on my system. I don't recall doing any updates yesterday, just a couple of reboots.

Strange. I have this problem, too: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/623791

I have done several reboots, no luck so far.

Apparently I had only wrong mixer settings.
