wifi and sound not working

Asked by drskartik

I am using ubuntu 8.04 2.6.24-24 generic.
All of a sudden my sound and wifi have stopped working, probably while installing some routine updates through update manager.
On pressing vol control following message appears:
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."

lspci-v shows the following for wifi adapter:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
 Subsystem: Unknown device 1a32:0112
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
 Memory at f6cf0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
 Capabilities: <access denied>

I tried earlier generic version 2.6.23, sound was working in that version but wifi was still not worki

My sound card is now working, but couldn't get wifi on track.
went into the link mentioned ago but am getting stuck in the second step: I get this message:
kartik@kartik-laptop:~$ sudo tar -jxvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
tar: compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

How to get beyond this?

Congrats on getting the sound-card sorted. Please give a brief summary of what you did to fix it to help others with a similar problem looking through the "Solved Answers" database to find an answer when they have the same trouble.

Thanks and regards from
