No sound when headphones are connected via 3.5mm jack

Asked by Serge Rogatch

Hello,

I had sound in my headphones until a reboot a few days ago. It seems that the system updated something and the sound disappeared. Please, find the details about my laptop here: http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=477e2c704da4c051882002f41f3a591a12c81f10

The laptop speakers work fine. However, when I plug cable headphones to the 3.5 mm jack in my laptop, the sound disappears for the speakers and the headphones get no sound either.

Could you please help? The solutions on the internet did not work for me.

Thanks,
Serge Rogatch

If you install and use pavucontrol does it help?

No, it doesn't help, and I've just checked that on Windows the sound in the headphones appears for a second after plugging them in, then disappears.

If sound doesn't work in Windows either, then this most probably is not an Ubuntu problem.

In some similar cases resetting the BIOS to sane defaults has helped.

It doesn't help to reset CMOS. However, on the internet, they speak a lot about headphone sound disappearing due to dual boot on the other systems.

This is still not resolved. Perhaps it's a bug in Ubuntu 20.04.

If sound does not correctly work in Windows, then it cannot be an Ubuntu bug.

It can be both Ubuntu and Windows bugs. The internet speaks a lot about problems with headphones on dual-boot systems. Basically, neither OS handles correctly the presence of the other OS on the system. Correct handling involves some special resetting of the sound card device.
