Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) sound/video problem!

Asked by Melinda

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) yesterday but am having trouble hearing, seeing videos, music. For example when I enter my MySpace page I can't hear my Profile Playlist anymore. Next when I enter Justin.tv to see live broadcast T.V. I don't see anything. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try working through this guide and see if that sorts out all those problems
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I suspect that you will mainly be looking for adobe-flash-player or equivalents but that page should help sort out all sorts of other multimedia stuff too
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Let me know if you get a solution. I am having problems with video too, athough mine is locally stored files and dvds. My streaming videos (web based) play just fine.

Okay I've downloaded adobe-flash-player but I still can't hear my Profile Playlist or see Justin.tv. Do I have to download a certain player?

@ Patrick
I think your problem is slightly different. Please try posting as a separate question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+addquestion
I think you just need to work through the Medibuntu page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
and install the best driver for your graphics card. "envyng" helps uninstall your old one and then finds, installs and tweaks the best one for your system, in some cases it has caused an slight problem which has forced people to go back to their old driver :( Note that envyng has 2 different packages; envny-gtk for Xubuntu and Ubuntu main but envyng-qt for Kubuntu. After that go to a command-line and enter "gstreamer-properties" and switch the Video Output from "Auto" to "... (no Xv)". This bypasses the Gpu on your graphics card and pulls all that back into the main cpu's on your mbord. It's a known issue that's being worked on but will take a long time to fix, in the mean-time the work-around seems good in most cases and stops any annoying flickering.

@ Melinda
I'm not sure but maybe something like MythTv or Tivo would be worth looking into?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallMythOnUbuntu
I didn't really look for Tivo as it seems to be quite tricky and i think it's a Windows program anyway? I'm not sure about any of this though.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

MySpace pages should definitely be working now that you worked through Medibuntu and got flash-player. Sorry i don't know what's causing this problem. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will pop in and give a good answer!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Okay I've already loaded the current version of Adobe Flash Player. Now I keep getting this message
To view this content, JavaScript must be enabled, and you need the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. So what is a JavaScript? How do I enable it? Thanks!

In firefox try

Edit - Preferences - Content - Enable JavaScript

and the other option there too. But also click on "Advanced" then UNtick the top (?) option which is "Move or resize window". This should prevent javascript from being able to resize your window inconveniently which otherwise allows some problems with the window becoming so large that the title bar gets hidden under the top taskbar. There are a few other options you might not want to allow there too, i've disabled all except about messages in the status bar, cos i find these quite entertaining sometimes :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi! I just wanted to let you know my problem with hearing, seeing videos, music, is fixed. Finally after a few weeks I'm able to see, hear, MySpace, You Tube, Justin.TV, once again. I followed some instructions on a post from the Ubuntu forum and it helped. Here it is "If any others are installed, such as libflash-mozplugin, mozilla-plugin-gnash, or swfdec-mozilla,
mark them for removal". Then after removing swfdec-mozilla, I opened a terminal, typed sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree. Went to You Tube, everything was working great. Below are the directions. Bye!

Open up System → Administration → Synaptic Package Manager, and search for "flash".
The packages you want are flashplugin-nonfree, libflashsupport, and possibly ubuntu-restricted-extras (which will install the flashplugin-nonfree package and a number of others).
Mark those for installation (or reinstallation).
If any others are installed, such as libflash-mozplugin, mozilla-plugin-gnash, or swfdec-mozilla,
mark them for removal. Then type sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree.
