alsa does not recognized audio card
hi,
I am struggling since days to get Ubuntu to recognize my audio card. It looks like the hardware is detected (Intel C230 on motherboard), but can not get it working. My laptop is a Acer V5-591. I have "dummy output" as hardware. I run Ubuntu 20.04 with kernel 5.8.0-50-generic.
I have tried alsa and oss4.
Based on the diagnotic steps (https:/

You are probably missing a driver package,
Do you have the package linux-modules-
What is the output of the command
dpkg -l | ' linux-'

Sorry, the word "grep" got lost in my command, but you corrected that perfectly.
What output do you receive for the command
sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
cat /proc/asound/cards

Your new output shows that the audio device is correctly identified.
I do not see a reason that this device would not show up in the sound configuration dialogue.
Is there any success when you now execute the commands in step 1 of the sound troubleshooting procedure?

hi Manfred, i have redone step 1 again. No luck.
I have noticed that as part of the latest script in the procedure that the command m -r ~/.pulse* does not work as .pulse does not exist.

Does anyone could help troubleshooting this:
alsactl init
alsactl: init:1759: No soundcards found...
I suspect the issue to start from this point. Same output using aplay -l.
Cheers

For whatever reason the driver is not loaded automatically.
You have to manually issue the command
sudo modprobe -v snd_hda_intel"
and then alsa will find the sound card and commands like aplay will work.

The sound card issue is still not solved. I still have the dummy card, but at least i can see now the card is aplay... But after this being done, i am still unsure about how to troubleshoot is further. Any idea would be welcome

hi,
I found some more interesting info. I saw when running pacmd list-cards command, i had active profile: set to "off". I have then tried to modify it, and activate one of the profile using pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.
I see now a difference. The dummy output is gone, but it is still not working. I am wondering why i have only HDMI profile. It looks like that during the installation of Ubuntu it did pick up my external screen. But i can not see a profile that would match the sound card onboard. I suspect there is something wrong. Is there any way to set up a profile for my sound card so that i can activate it?

Try installing Pulse Audio Volume Control : sudo apt-get install pavucontrol
In the Sound Tab configuration Select the profile mentioning HDMI, the sound output should switch to HDMI.
Try installing GNOME ALSA Mixer form the Ubuntu Software Center, It is a snap package.
After it is installed make sure to unmute all of the mute checkmark boxes. This is a GUI Mixer.

hi Bernard, thanks for the note. Pavucontrol is already installed. The issue is that it detects only HDMI profile. If I connect to an external TV via HDMI sounds work. But there is no profile for the laptop loudspeaker or headphone. No analog device is available only a dummy output. I can therefore not switch on anything that could get sound working outside of HDMI. The sound card is supposed to be an Intel 100 series/C230, but i wonder how to get it detected automatically. I have spent weeks looking for a solution without success. I have to say that i have done an install of Ubuntu from an other Windows partition that had a problem with the onboard display (external monitor was working) and the sound card. Could it be that the problem has been taken over while Ubuntu has been installed as additional boot partition? Any idea? Cheers

Do you still need to issue the "modprobe snc_hda_intel" command to get the sound card detected?
For a workaround you can put the module name "snd_hda_intel" into the file /etc/modules and it will be automatically loaded after each boot.

This is not the issue Manfred. I can run the command, but i still have the dummy output after running it. Even if i pulseaudio --kill et start, i see have the dummy output. I am therefore stuck. I still see only HDMI profile and no analogic sound profile. So i can not get sound on my loudspeaker or headphone. If i connect an external TV my computer will switch to HDMI automatically i can get sound through TV.

it looks like the profiles are defined automatically, as udev-detect is enabled (in the default.pa script). I am wondering if there is any issue with the detection on the build-in audio card. Cheers.

In case it could help. I have run a diagnostics with alsa. Here is the output:
The card is detected, but i can get a physical output (except the HDMI one). I have upgrade on Ubuntu 20.1 to see if could refresh the config. But unfortunately no luck...
I am running out of ideas. Does anyone know how to force a re-installation of the sound card?
Cheers
Marc

In the meanwhile i have remove snd-hda-intel from the blacklist and added to the module file. I have also tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04 in order to get the card recognized properly but still no luck. I am running out of ideas where the problem could come from. It is hard to get information related to the compatibility of the sound card.
Running alsactl shows an issue. I got the feeling that the default config does not work properly, but i cannot figure out why...

hi Manfred, i don't know. I have removed the line, and the module snd-hda-intel is loaded during the boot.
