Cannot record audio with Audiocity + Ubuntu 8.04

Asked by TonyR

Hi

I have sound working perfectly however i canot get the Vu meters to react in Audiocity when i paly CD audio even through I can hear perfect sound.

I have tried all permatations in Edit Preferences Audio Inputs to no avail. I do not understand what the option available to me mean as Ubuntu uses cryptic codes like "STAC9758.59 (OSS Mixer)".. What the hell is that.

AudioCity on a windows machine works immediately on install but on my Ubuntu box diddly sqwat.

I have a SB 5.1 sound card so waht device is OSS:/dev/dsp?

What not use plain English so we can tell what we have to configure.

Please help as this should not be so confusing.

Plain english such as Windows uses? In Windows you shutdown the machine by first clicking on the "Start" button? And their "Add/Remove Programs is good for adding programs? Lol. At a guess i would say that OSS Mixer stands for Open Source Sound Mixer.

Err, it does seem that you are trying to install and use a Windows application in Linux, please either find native linux versions to get the functionality of the software or else try using the Wine forums to get this Windows app translated into linux.
http://appdb.winehq.org/

To search for a native linux app(s) to get the same functionality try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not the root/SuperUser one. All packages already installed are marked with a green blob to install something new just right click and choose "install". Either search tool should help but i prefer the search button as it also searches through descriptions as well as titles so it lets me be a lot more vague.

Before starting on all that it might well be worth working through the Medibuntu worksheet to get your multimedia apps working properly
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
and to sort out the the repositories the package managers look through when searching around the internet for programs for you.

Hope this helps
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Tom

Thanks for y9our response.

No I am certainly not using the Windows of Audiocity in Linux. I installed Audiocity for Linux version 1.3.4 beta vua the ubuntu package manager and i canot get it to recognise any audio input.

i tested on another Linux machine and it does kick up the level metres on the 2nd machine hgowever when I capture audio the sound is distorted. Also Lame is installed however when I try to convert to MP3 I get a message that Linux cannot find Lame - but it is installed.

In windows it works 1st time. In Linux it is impossible yet this is supposed to be an open source solution?--
