"Dummy Output" for audio - yet aplay from CLI shows hardware and plays .wav file

Now at Step 3 which uses an alsa-project.org script to capture system audio hardware/software information and directions to post that output on launchpad. Script output follows below.
NOTE: I have been wrestling with this sudden "Dummy output" issue for several weeks. I listened to audio on this system for most of the past week and most of today, but had to restart to fix an issue while trying to re-partition an attached USB drive. On restart "Dummy Output" reappears. Logically whatever is amiss cannot be an issue with drivers/hardware. I cannot have listened to audio on this Lenovo desktop this morning unless drivers/hardware are installed and correct. But multiple restarts over the past two hours have failed to re-establish working audio apart from the use of aplay from the command line.
Logically something is going awry on boot/driver loading/software loading. If I can, right now as I enter this text on this page do:
#> aplay -D sysdefault ding.wav
and hear the audio file, at the leat ALSA is correct. Again, logically, the issue is another audio component and not ASLA. Likely culprit is pulseaudio, but damned if I can figure it out. I've stopped/started pulseaudio dozens of times. pavucontrol shows the same information that the KDE AudioConfig controls show: "Dummy Output" for Playback Devices, and in Advanced NO hardware is shown (neither the Analog nor the HDMI, and there should be both, one for the output jacks on front/back of the case, and for the HDMI to my monitor that also has speakers).
After I submit this I will continue with Step 4 of the guide referenced above.
A google search for "Dummy Output" shows a LOT of people are having a similar issue.

If it helps, I'm a newly retired IT professional, though my work was not in operating systems, etc. I know my way around the command line and I'm unafraid of scripting having spent a decide as an app admin on Solaris systems (bash, perl, and powershell, though my perl is very rusty). Happy to get into the weeds if I can help get this problem fixed for both myself and other users.
