no sound through HDMI with AMD 1002:1637

Xubuntu 20.04.1 LTS on a new ASUS PN50 pc with AMD Ryzen 5 4500U CPU

The sound card (AMD 1002:1637) is recognised, the analogic output works but the HDMI connection is not detected (though a monitor with internal speaker is connected, working with other ubuntu boxes)

I understand from other posts there was a regression with the driver for this card, but the problem persists even after the latest libasound2 updates from today:
