Audio on usb cam is not recording

I installed, unmuted my microphone. Did not help.

Is the volume cranked?

If you run:

alsamixer

in terminal, use cursors as you expect, ESC to exit and M to un/mute. Use F6 to switch the audio device manipulated.

Is there a button to press on the camera itself which could change things?

In alsamixer I unmuted the mic. Did not help.
Regarding the usb camera - I have MAX200 ma Dragon. I wnader if there is any button there...
