sound muted at start, no sound in Rthythmbox/vlc/real player - is obvious or bug?

Asked by Martin Crees

I thought I had Alsa working but now I have no sound on my Novatech-680 . After some updates in Ubuntu 8.10 about 14 days ago, having before got it to play CDs on vlc and record/extract in Rhythmbox, using Alsa rather than Pulseaudio, my sound died. I have checked many posts and followed their instructions to no successful end.

I updated to Jaunty from 8.10. in the hope that it would clear any false settings. No.

I then read through and did everything here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012

Why I had to revert to Pulseaudio when I thought Alsa was the better/successor to Pa, which never worked in 8.10 is beyond me... (Having installed pavdevchooser.) Volume control is muted on boot or restart.

After following all the steps in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012 I put in these requests singly on terminal. (Having installed pavdevchooser.) Volume control is muted on boot or restart.I have to override an "Open Rhythmbox" panel if I try to play discs etc. in vlc. Rthythmbox has to be forced to quit and comes up when I go to Systems>Home folder, instead of the folder.

From the post above, I understand that SIS966 is a card that is not “liked” by pulseaudio. It seems also there is something like a conflict between alsa and pulseaudio when they load at boot. But haven't I got rid of Alsa? I got this list of sound hardware, cards etc.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have been up one wall, across the ceiling, down again about six times a day. Two weeks and no music!

While waiting I did this in terminal:

martinc@martinc-laptop:~$ killall pulseaudio

martinc@martinc-laptop:~$ pulseaudio -vvv
This gave the lot below at *, I read through it, spotted the mention of pulse-rt and ?fault of no alsa mixer or no front. I did adduser in terminal for pulse etc. I tried to install alsamixer – although Synaptic says it's installed and got this -martinc@martinc-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install alsamixer
