sound stopped working - "Dummy Output"

Asked by Steve Dum

on ubuntu 20.04 sound was working fine. About kernel 5.4.0-47 or -48 sound stopped working getting "Dummy Output" which apparently indicates driver failed to load. I tried the 20.20 Beta live cd and sound worked there. I loaded 20.20 beta and
sound doesn't work while running full system.

All the jillion try this things I have seen, had no effect. Following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedureffect.
I downloaded and ran the alsa-info.sh script. It put output at
http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=f5ad3caf1e48bc25a9b1a8be8a2d7a146603fbb0
hope you can help. I had high hopes when sound worked on the 20.20 live cd.
but the 20,20 beta I downloaded and installed on 3 Oct 2020 didn't restore sound.

I have been trying mainly chrome played video to speakers on my hp Pavilion laptop with sound to speakers.
The diagnosing was with sound up/down hot keys, but Sound Settings, pavucontrol both show same dummy mixer.
alsamixer seems to get some data elsewhere and reports Card: HDA Intel PCH, Chip Realtek ALC295

I suggest you report a bug. Groovy is not ready and not stable

Try resetting pulseaudio user config. If something is messed up there, that would explain why sound works in live environment, but not on install:

rm ~/.config/pulse*
pulseaudio -k

Can you help with this problem?
