No sound from headphones 20.04.1

Asked by Barry DeZonia

I recent;y upgraded from 18 LTS to 20.04.1 LTS. Since doing so my headphones connected to my computer's headphone jack produces no audio. Through the internal speaker all audio works fine. I have tried nearly everything I have found online (including nearly everything on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure) to no avail. alsamixer shows things look good. pavucontrol shows audio signals are going to the headphones. I can test with rhythmbox and with the Sound test code in the Settings app and neither work. I have booted an 18.04.4 live disk and the headphones work fine. Not sure what to do next.

For any interested parties I've found a simple workaround:

When I connect my headphones it asks if they are a Mic or Headphones or Headset. If I choose headphones (which they are) I get no sound. If I choose headset (which they are not) I do get sound. I notice that the Input that is shown in Sound Settings changes depending upon what my choice is and when it thinks there is a mic attached to my headphones the input is different and the sound automagically works.
