Microphone not working at normal speed to record.

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 and when I try to use Messenger to talk with friends they cannot understand me. I sound like Alvin the Chipmunk. How can I fix this issue? Thanks for your anticipate help.

My voice sounds like 33 1/3 recprdbplay at 78. My recorded voice sounds
terrible and is hard to understand. My son built my computer and my OS is
Ubuntu 18.04. I. Would appreciate you help in resolving this issue.
