Dell Insipiron 7000 with Ubuntu 19.10 lost audio drivers, with "dummy output" in Settings

Asked by Luke Bayes

A few days ago, I made the unforgivable mistake of attempting to connect a bluetooth headset to an otherwise mostly functional Ubuntu installation.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 7000.

After installing bluez and blueman and other assorted packages, and never actually getting it working, I discovered the next day that I've lost all sound on this computer.

I have been running, "apt update && apt upgrade" on the regular, so it's entirely possible the timing is just coincidence.

At any rate, the Sound settings panel now shows, "Dummy Output" for audio out and zero choices for inputs. Of course, nothing makes noise either.

I've tried many things over about 4-6 hours of troubleshooting, including:

* Uninstall/reinstall alsa, pulseaudio and anything else Stackoverflow posters recommend
* Disable audio in the bios, reboot, re-enable audio in the bios, reboot
* Edit a variety of files in /etc/...

I have a nagging suspicion that my problem is rooted in this diagnostic output:

--------------------------------------------------------8<--------------------------------------------------------

!!Soundcards recognised by ALSA
!!-----------------------------

--- no soundcards ---

-------------------------------------------------------->8--------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to fix the problem.

Any help, tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

At any rate, here's the diagnostic output that was asked for by the Troubleshooting page that brought me here:

There were already some other question similar to yours. There might be a problem with kernel version 5.3.0-42-generic. If you boot into an older kernel (from the grub menu), does it work then?

Several people have reported sound problems after an upgrade of the kernel packages, and you probably experience the same problem.
A bug report Bug #1868165 has already been created.

Thank you for the responses, they were super helpful.

I was able to rollback my kernel to 5.3.18-050318-generic, and not only does audio work great, but I also had some success with Bluetooth on this rig as well.
