Sound stopped working via NVIDIA sound through my monitor

Asked by Ian Clarke

My sound worked fine from initial installation of Ubuntu several months ago, but several weeks ago it stopped working - I don't know what caused it, although I did update from 19.4 to 19.10 in the hope that it might fix it. The update was successful, but didn't fix the sound.

My sound plays through my monitor which is connected to my PC via a HDMI or DisplayPort connection (have tried both, sound doesn't work for either).

I followed the diagnostic steps here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Here is the resulting information: http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=cf1b5e5f6ee1f1c941fe74004c0f9cc702e0325d

I normally use i3 rather than the Ubuntu desktop, however In Ubuntu sound settings the output device seems correct - "HTML / DisplayPort 4 - TU102 High Definition Audio Controller", but there is no sound out of either speaker when I test them.

Here is the output from "Step 4" in the SoundTroubleshootingProcedure doc: https://gist.github.com/sanity/253ab73ffab177f42fdf6c903361ed03

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After months this somehow seemed to fix itself just the day after I submitted this, unfortunately I don't know why.
