no sound in remote desktop connection

Asked by Drunkpunk

Trying to connect two ubuntu-running computers via remote desktop connection but I'm unable to forward sound from my ancient Dell desktop to my laptop. I have used remote desktop between winxp and vista and managed to forward sound with no difficulty.

I've googled extensively and followed the instructions here: http://blog.paulbetts.org/index.php/2007/04/15/pulseaudio-in-ubuntu-feisty-play-sound-over-the-network/ almost to the letter, the only command I couldn't follow was "Now, go to System->Preferences->Sounds and ensure “Enable Software Mixing” is turned on." because I couldn't find that option anywhere.

Any help much appreciated as this will really help me migrate from Mr. Gates and I've been two days trying to puzzle it through.

PS. Does the fact that I'm using Ubuntu Studio make any difference?

Err, not sure about this but "Enable Software Mixing is a tiny tickbox at the top of the 2nd tab, "Sounds", in the Sound Preferences gui. It is very small and easy to miss as the rest of that tab is almost all much larger drop-downs and this is just a tiny tick box.

Hope this helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for the response Tom, checked, checked, triple checked, cleaned glasses, checked again! Wiped monitor. Checked again. There's no tick box there, not even anything that says "enable software mixing" which confuses me even more.

Just to make sure I'm not looking at the wrong GUI: I'm going system>preferences>sound when I get that, I see two tabs; one with devices, one with sound. Devices shows dropdowns for
Sound Events: Sound Playback: Pulse Audio (was set to autodetect)
Music and Movies: Sound Playback: Pulse Audio.....and so on...

On the sounds tab there are three tickboxes: "play alerts and sound effects/play sound effects when buttons are pressed/play alert sound" nothing else there.

If I can get this working I need only keep one micro$uck box for games that are as yet unsupported by wine! Please don't let this be the end of my Ubuntu experiments!

Well a lot of us have dual-boot so we can go back into Windows whenever we want a laugh. Hmm your gui sounds different from mine. Mine has 3 tabs and what you describe on your 2nd is on my 3rd but the tab title is "System Beeps" (which it doesn't now, it flashes a bit discretely now)

Hey Tom, thanks again, I appreciate the effort. Both machines are currently dual booters one with vista the other with xp. Obviously I don't really know, but my hunch is that the problem has something to do with the lack of third tab. If ANYONE else feels like wading in on this one, I'll be checking back until I run out of hair to tear out!

Now almost bald. Maybe Linux isn't for me. I expected to have to boot back to windows for gaming but had high hopes of managing everything else via Ubuntu. I don't even mind 12 hours and more tracking down solutions to problems, but I've yet to find a solution to this that works anywhere.

Well don't be too harsh on yourself. Mostly Windows gets installed & tweaked by a team of experts with the full backing of the hardware manufacturers. Also it takes years to get to grips with Windows whereas you'll soon find Linux quite easy, just don't expect miracles overnight! I kept using Windows with only occasional forays into linux for ages before i felt comfortable about switching. Just don't rush it :)

It might well be worth re-posting this question asap to catch the start of the weekend rush! There's new people at the front-desk and its worth floating this question past them

Dohh, your re-posting seems to have passed through our very thin net here. It seems you are trying to do something really quite advanced. It might be worth trying to find forums for the particular virtual machine software you are trying to use VirtualBox? Also there are some other places worth posting the question in

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToGetHelp

Oddly i think i didn't give some basic trouble-shooting guides so here are these ...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

There's also a wikipedia page about "alsa" but i couldn't find it this time.
Good luck, hope this helps!

Hey Tom,
Sorry for the late response.
Unfortunately the only solution I've found has been to go back to using the RDC between Vista and XP and, sadly, FOSS loses again when attempting to use VLC while even ol' Win MediaPlayer9 handles everything. I will continue to play with Linux on the desktop as I think it COULD be exactly the OS for me - but obviously not yet! As to your questions about VirtualBox, I just used whatever software package comes bundled with Ubuntu to connect via remote desktop. Since I'm using Vista *spits* at the present mo I can't check to see exactly what it's called, but I'll get back onto it.

The other site I've bookmarked in regard to this is: http://birijan.com.np/?q=node/81
