and now stuck in Windows until this is fixed (If that's not an incentive),
and from here of course Nvidia High Definition Sound Card is working
Driver Version 1.3.37.4
Driver Date 6/24/2018

So it (this driver) has been around for at least 2 1/2 months - surely
linux has it it in its' kernel? Please Find a fix

Here is a suggestion from another post regarding some new laptops ... but I don't understand it - Pray Help?? Me and Others

Unfortunately, the kernel won't see the audio function unless you remove the graphics function first, which temporarily breaks the console. Because of that, it works best if you write a script to do it so you don't have to SSH into the system or try to type the commands into the console blind. Obviously, you have to stop the X server first so that you can unload the NVIDIA drivers.
∘ For example, on my system, the GPU is at 01:00.0 and its parent PCI bridge is 00:01.0. So the script I use is:
‣ setpci -s 01:00.0 0x488.l=0x2000000:0x2000000
‣ rmmod nvidia-drm nvidia-modeset nvidia
‣ echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/remove

and for the record

It IS an Optimus Laptop, and there is NO Option in "nvidia-settings" for the Intel Option

No Intel which has always been easily detectable in nvidia-settings and lspci / lshw in (00:01.0 I believe)
in 50 Optimus laptops I have installed Ubuntu - Always Trying to help Linux

I just purged nvida and will reinstall Ubuntu's "Suggested & Ubuntu's Tested Nvidia-390 Driver" using Additional Drivers OF COURSE, and also removed the graphics .... ppa:graphics-drivers, to make it see the Tested version.
Also

Perhaps this comment from my own research is relevant my instincts are that it IS!

" The newest kernels have moved the video mode setting into the kernel. So all the programming of the hardware specific clock rates and registers on the video card happen in the kernel rather than in the X driver when the X server starts.. This makes it possible to have high resolution nice looking splash (boot) screens and flicker free transitions from boot splash to login screen. Unfortunately, on some cards this doesnt work properly and you end up with a black screen. Adding the nomodeset parameter instructs the kernel to not load video drivers and use BIOS modes instead until X is loaded."

and just FYI a few programs have oddly puny fonts, and when nvidia was purged, they ALL went back to normal, BUT, on installation of YOUR Tested Nvidia Driver and reboot (which went very smooth) the font issue is back (I think it is likely because I added "nomodeset in grub. I will remove it reboot and to help you (UBUNTU) post if it has solved the Font issues.

And just my standard last ditch attempt for some attention for this issue.

As a seasoned helper of hundreds with Ubuntu, I can assure you (I am no Complete Expert - but nobody is), and I lack at remembering all of the command lines- though I have probably used them all over the past 10+ Years. Having said that there is still a small but real chance I am missing something basic, but VERY UNLIKELY.

So here is my point - Ubuntu Linux is getting Awesome in the past couple of years -and you all know what I mean - but I digress - My point ...

If I can't find a solution or need a solution you can BET - 100's more to thousands or even millions (Hopefully) will too and the Hopefully is not sadistic - hopefully because problems lead to solutions - and make good come out of bad - Like my dear Mother used to say (She Passed last year - sniff) .

So help not me but all those who also need this if not WILL need this fix!

it is related to Ubuntu not getting along with Hps or Omens / and amazingly ...

• I can confirm that kernel module, posted by Maik Freudenberg
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75985#c27),

is working fine on my system. Thank you for the fix. The HDMI audio device now works as it should.
• The steps I did to enable HDMI audio device:
1. Download and extract the file nvhda.tar.xz. (from above link)
2. run these commands in Terminal in the extracted folder
make
sudo make install
echo nvhda | sudo tee -a /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
echo "options nvhda load_state=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nvhda.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u

3. Reboot.
