No sound

After an update, my 18.04 LTS developed an issue with sound whereas there would be none in either headphones or speakers, until I either plugged or un-plugged headphones, then re-inserted the headphone jack into the computer.. At that point there would be sound in the headphones, and if I then unplug them there would be sound emanating from the speakers.
