I can't get sound card to work. It doesn't show up at all in sound settings.

@actionparsnip yes... plus - I just had an epiphany moment... wiping the dust away from the ports on the back, I discovered that the front speaker's lead was in fact plugged into the side surround port instead of the Line-out port. I don't know when or how long ago it got swapped to the wrong port - I've just been plugging and unplugging it into that wrong port thinking it was the correct one (not being able to easily read the label).

The moment I plugged the front speaker lead into the correct port, the option to select analogue surround suddenly re-appeared in sound settings and everything was working again.

I guess this non-problem is now solved.

Fixed it for me as well. After correcting plugs, I ran this and the profiles, inlcuding surround sound became visable in the gnome sound settings

sudo alsa force-reload

At least sound started working. The gnome "sound" settings test feature didn't work properly for my 5.1 setup at all. However, playing music and testing left vs right and front vs back showed 5.1 was sort of being applied, but something still sounded off. It didn't seem to be balancing sound between all channels properly. E.g. front left way too soft, and front right dead quiet.

Double checked cable colours for my logitech Z506 matched the back panel audio colours properly.
- Green/line out: front speakers
- Black: read speakers
- Orange: Centre / Base speakers

Eventually, installing hdajackretask and custom setting the jacks/ports to match as plugged in (which should've been the default!) seems to set things straight.
