installed kxstudio packages on Mate 18.04, now no sound

Asked by Bill

I installed the kxstudio packages, including the low latency kernel on Mate 18.04, now I have no sound. I followed troubleshooting procedures for the obvious (not muted, Jack and Pulse Audio on and bridged, etc.) with no luck. I am a relative newbie to Linux, and am not sure what to do at this point. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop with onboard sound on the motherboard. Thank you in advance for any consideration given to this matter.

If you boot the generic kernel is it OK?

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I have tried to boot to the generic kernel to no avail. From the reading I've done thus far, this seems to be a fairly common issue without a definitive solution. In my particular case, I feel as though my lingering fear of the command line could be a factor in arriving at a solution; I have found a troubleshooting page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure but am reluctant to follow some of the steps, for fear of further messing up the install. Again, thank you for your suggestion, I am open to any further advice in the matter.
