Toshiba F20-137, no sound on new installation 9.04

Asked by buurd

Hi!
I have just finished a fresh installation of Ubutnu 9.04 on my Toshiba Qosimo F20-137. As with Ubuntu 8.10 there are no sound. As far as I can understand sound is on and nothing is muted.

Since the installation is new and unpolluted I consider this as a bug.

Below is the output from alsa-info.sh:

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk

Step 3: copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and add these lines to the end of the file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

If the 'lenovo' model option does not activate sound on the speakers, then please try one of these alternatives:

 AD1981
   basic 3-jack (default)
   hp HP nx6320
   thinkpad Lenovo Thinkpad T60/X60/Z60
   toshiba Toshiba U205

Step 4: Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

Step 5; Please reboot pc after every change to the alsa-base file and retest sound

Step 6: Experiment with the audio settings in gnome-alsamixer and asoundconf-gtk until you get sound (hopefully). Both tools can be launched through the Terminal

Regards,

Mark

I have now spent a couple of hours with restarts and playing around the settings accordning to Marks checklist so now I basically don't know what the original settings was anymore. But I had no luck.

Going to look at the link.

Hi,

Did you try the other 4 model options? To be clear, the 4 alternative model options are:

basic
hp
thinkpad
toshiba

After setting each model option (one model at a time) in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and after rebooting, it is necessary to tweak the settings in gnome-alsamixer....

I'm sorry if you already tried it this way....

Mark

Hi,

After gaining more experience in these types of audio issues, I can see why your soundcard could not work in Ubuntu 9.04:

Your ALSA information script shows the following output:

!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.18rc3
Library version:
Utilities version: 1.0.18

As you can see, the ALSA library is not installed. It should show library version 1.0.18, but it is empty.

So I recommend following this procedure:

Upgrade ALSA to version 1.0.21 using this link:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/08/31/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-jaunty-9-04/

Then verify that the ALSA information script shows the exact same version number for ALSA driver, library and utilities after the ALSA upgrade is done.

Then do the procedure I mentioned before:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer asoundconf-gtk

Step 3: copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add these lines to the end of the file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

If the 'lenovo' model option does not activate sound on the speakers, then please try one of these alternatives:

 AD1981
   basic 3-jack (default)
   hp HP nx6320
   thinkpad Lenovo Thinkpad T60/X60/Z60
   toshiba Toshiba U205

Step 4: Then navigate to System>Preferences>Sound and change everything to ALSA

Step 5; Please reboot pc after every change to the alsa-base.conf file and retest sound

Step 6: Experiment with the audio settings in gnome-alsamixer and asoundconf-gtk until you get sound (hopefully). Both tools can be launched through the Terminal

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Goodluck you can do it, that's exactly what I did while quitting. Smoked joints whenever I felt a craving and it helped tremendously. The first three days are the hardest, after that it felt like it was out of my system and after that the physical negative aspects were all over and then it was all about changing things associated with it. Good luck! Its hard but possible!

Subject: WINRAR!

Cut the bullshit. Islam has issues with every single major religion in this world. Heck, Islam has issues with people from the same religion. Tell me one country or religion where Jihadists aren't fighting against. They hate the Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, everyone.

I hear and read that Islam is a religion of peace, but why do the extremists of this particular religion have issues with every single other religion in this world? Almost every single global conflict in this world is related to the Jihadists using Islam to justify their wars.

I understand that not all Muslims are bad or the religion itself isn't at fault, but I am guessing there must be some deep fundamental foundational issues with this religion which may be resulting their extremists want to destroy everything that's not representative of their beliefs.

This is NOT an Islam vs America issue. This is an Islam vs Islam issue.

Lol, clever!

They could come back with "yeah but it's not a *sexy* recording" to which I'll let them know you still get a few devious chuckles in there. The funny thing for me is that I listened to it specifically because the transcript wasn't too enticing. lol, the 'strength' in your voice still comes out though.

Holy crap, that is pure crazy town.

You said you hardly think about her anymore which sounds like exactly what you should continue to do. Someone this hostile out of nowhere probably has issues (assuming you were not the evil villain in the falling out) issues you don't need to deal with while hearing up for your life together.

It must be frustrating as Hell, and hurtful even though there's no longer a relationship there. Don't play into the drama, and don't let the people around you either. Good luck!
