New installation of 16.04.4, problems with sound (internal speakers and headphones)
Hello!
My internal SSD died,so I did a new installation of 16.04.4 onto an external hard drive. It's a little slow, but it works fine for the most part--except for the sound. Sometimes there will be no sound from the laptop's speakers, and no sound when I plug in headphones, right upon startup. Sometimes it will work for a while and then just stop working. I never had a problem with sound before, and I've been using 16.04.4 for ~2 years.

I attempted to install pavucontrol, but it was already installed. When I tried to launch it from Terminal with "pavucontrol" a window labeled "Volume Control" opened up and said "Establishing a connection to PulseAudio," but in Terminal I got a running output of "shm_open() failed: No such file or directory" repeated over and over again.
I have updated my kernel to 4.13.0-38-generic, and upon startup, I can hear the volume test noises (the ones you hear when you raise or lower the volume) from the laptop's speakers and on headphones, but when I try to play audio from a website like YouTube, I don't hear anything through the speakers or headphones. I also don't hear anything when I try to play an audio file in VLC (see below for more info).
In Gnome ALSA Mixer, master, headphone, speaker, PCM, Capture, and Internal volumes are all turned all the way up. None of them are muted. Mic Boos is turned all the way down, but I don't plan on recording audio, and Beep is halfway up. The Rec box under Capture is checked. Auto-Mute Mode is not turned on. I don't see any other settings or options that are discussed in the sound troubleshooting guide. I do see five boxes labeled "IEC958" at the bottom of the window, all of which but the first one are ticked.

Also I'm not sure why the name of the mixer is the same as the name of the codec--I thought they were different things (according to the troubleshooting tutorial, "Each combination of audio codec, audio mixer and audio device name requires a very specific configuration in the alsa-base.conf file, if the audio chipset does not work out-of-
I'm too scared to edit /etc/modprobe.
Additionally, I opened an MP4 file in VLC and got this error message:

The audio device "default" could not be used:
Connection refused.
Under the volume display in my top menu bar, it shows that the volume is turned up. But when I open System Settings>Sound Settings, it says the Output Volume is not muted but is turned all the way down. Even if I change this, when I reopen Sound Settings, it's back down zero again. And in the "Play Sound Through" box under Output, there is nothing listed.
When I attempt to launch PulseAudio Volume Control through the Launcher, again it hangs on "Establishign connection to PulseAudio. Please wait..."
If I try to launch PulseAudio Volume Meter (Playback), I get the error message "Connection failed: Protocol error"
I would really love to understand why this is happening, when I hadn't messed around with anything related to the sound before, and never had problems using the exact same version of ubuntu on the exact same machine (with the exception of now running Ubuntu from an external HDD vs an internal SSD...otherwise all the hardware and everything is the same).
