Suddenly no sound in LTS 16.04. Restarting pulseaudio alsa did not help

Asked by Hui Jun Ng

All of a sudden there is no sound in my Ubuntu LTS 16.04. I tried to restart and reinstall Pulseaudio, Alsa but it did not work. The pulseaudio controller shows that there is sound (volume bar is fluctuating) but there is no sound coming out from either my speaker nor headphones (tried both plugged and unplugged). Neither is malfunctioning and they both work in windows.

I've run the Alsa diagnostic tests and below is the output. Can someone enlighten me on the next steps?

Edit: I've uploaded the diagnostic test link below.

If you run:

alsamixer

Are all levels maxed and unmuted. Use M to un/mute. Cursor keys as you expect and ESC to exit. Use F6 to change the device manipulated

Hello,

Yes the levels are all maxed and unmuted in Alsamixer. I've checked pulse control and everything seems to be ok too, with volume at 100%, When i muted it at Alsamixer, the pulsecontrol shows that it is muted as well, which seems to be correct. But when its unmuted, it is showing output but no sound is coming out. I've tried both speakers and headphones.

Could it be an issue with my ubuntu installation? I was trying to install some other software previously (hadoop, spark etc) when I screwed up some of the permissions. I thought i rectified it since then and reinstall/updated ubuntu. Could that be a reason why? Would doing a clean reinstall of ubuntu work? These are desperate times..

Did you try:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.config/pulse/* ; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait 10 seconds then reboot
