Alsamixer not detecting laptop speakers

Initially the speakers worked with a fresh install of 16.04, but the system volume controls had no effect (volume was always maxed out at the OS level) and the volume could only be altered by application level controls (with a distinct scratching noise from the speakers while adjusting the volume).

After installing the proprietary NVidia drivers for my graphics card, the laptop speakers have completely stopped working. The only exception to this is after connecting and disconnecting a bluetooth headset - the speakers sometimes return to their maxed out state.

I tried running the commands found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure to no avail.

I have subsequently updated my kernel to the latest 4.15.10, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling `pavucontrol linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils lightdm ubuntu-desktop libasound2 libcanberra0` which also had no effect on the audio.

Alsamixer currently shows the Speaker setting to be maxed out at 00 as shown by this screenshot. https://i.stack.imgur.com/TBfpw.png
