sound troubleshooting 16.04

Asked by ezekiel.incorrigible on 2017-12-18

fresh install of ubuntu 16.04, no sound output through audio jack speakers or headphones (sound worked fine on an old ubuntu 10.04 install that has just been replaced)

switching output through pavucontrol doesn't make a difference, only one output (HDMI / DisplayPort) appears in ubuntu sound settings, which seems a little weird as there is no hdmi cable in my system (there is an unused hdmi port) - possibly the root of the issue?

any help diagnosing and fixing would be grand!

I changed internal audio device from 'auto' to 'enabled' in the bios and now sound works as expected. Perhaps this would be a good suggestion to include here? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
