Can still hear sound when volume at 0%

Asked by Hans L

When I turn my volume all the way down to 0, using Volume Applet 2.24.1, I expect it to be completely silent, but I can still hear sound in my headphones, which are plugged in to the regular(green) audio output jack of my sound card.
Is this a bug, or is my system somehow configured wrong?

I am using a SB Live 5.1 card with Ubuntu 8.10

I think this is a volume mixer issue, in that the volume control that you see in the volume control isn't directly linked to the volume control for the headphone (they are actually separate). If you manage to open the full volume control app (I think you need to doubleclick the volume control icon or right click and select "Volume Controls" or something like that), you should see the full range of volume controls for all your inputs and outputs. Try playing around with those to get things adjusted the way you like.
