sound suddenly stopped working on my dell latitute e7405

one day my sound was working and the next it wasn't. i've tried upgrading to 16.04 and reinstalling alsa mixer but nothing has worked. i don't know what to do (i'm an ubuntu newbie).

neither the headphones nor internal speakers were working yesterday but today when i turned on my computer, the sound magically worked (both headphones and internal speakers).
