(Desktop): No Sound after upgrading from 16.04 to 17.04
I upgraded my desktop from 16.04 to 17.04 and somehow after the upgrade I lost sound. I also lost the icon on the top right corner where sound used to be after a second reboot. Initially upon upgrade it was there but stuck at mute-wherein the mute check wouldn't unmute\uncheck. So I tried to uninstalling and reinstalling pulseaudio from the command line using a cmd I saw on a similar post here regarding the same topic. Now I don't have the icon on the top right corner and I still have no sound. So I started looking on the boards again, and found this guy (https:/

--Which I also did and got the same results but it didn't help me. I still have no sound. Feeling very frustrated. I didn't have an issue in my 16.04 and had forgotten I'd previously set it to auto-upgrade my image-ever since my life has been miserable--From having no internet for days because of it to now no audio. Any help I can get would be highly appreciated as all my courses require audio and its apparently important to me that I have audio working.

Thank you so much Manfred for you recommendation. I have followed steps 1- 3 without any success. I now have the audio icon back on the top right corner but it's still muted and wouldn't unmute. Also, after running the "bash alsa-info.sh --stdout" my Driver version is: k4.10.0-33-generic

After rebooting from Step 3 without any success I moved to step 4. Btw: Ii am running both desktop speakers and a headset, but at this point I am only concerned about my desktop speakers although I would prefer both to be working. So long as I can get my desktop speakers to work I can at least live with something...

I noticed after my last reboot that when it 17.04 launches into my sign-on screen the audio at the top right works. However, as soon as I sign on it returns to mute. There's also no login sound and sound still doesn't work. I am unable to toggle the sound bar either. But when I reboot the machine before I sign into my desktop the audio toggle bar is movable-tho without sound-and appears unchecked. I am the sole administrator of this unit but I don't logon with root as that doesn't seem possible. I hope this information maybe useful in helping me find a resolution... Thanks

OK, I've figured this out. Or PARTIALLY.
So I followed the instructions all the way through to Step 6 and discovered I couldn't launch pavucontrol from my terminal without going into root and when it launched it hung saying it was trying to connect to server, but when I would try it with root, I got all the information I was looking for.
After rebooting again, I noticed that when I launched my browser with root from terminal putting the -no-sandbox flag, I was able to launch a browser go to youtube and test my audio and it works fine. So bottomline is audio works when I am logged in as root but doesn't work on my normal desktop.
This is not a dual boot machine and I am the sole admin or root user and regular user of my unit. It's not a good idea for me to launch my browser under root. Is there a file somewhere that I need to share with my desktop user profile that I am not aware off? Please help. This may be the root cause of my problems. Audio works in root but not for my user profile. Please help anyone who can. I can't tell you how grateful I am and will be. Thanks in advance

This ISSUE HAS NOW BEEN RESOLVED.
I USED THE FOLLOWING CMDS: "sudo usermod -a -G groupname username"
To add my username into the pulse, pulse-audio groups for the mute to go away. After rebooting my audio now works.
