My audio issues seem to be quite convoluted. Sometimes sound works ok. Having wanted to use Jack and Gladish, I installed pulseaudio-module-jack. This seemed to work ok for apps that support Jack. But I have found that after running Jack that programs like Firefox seem to have trouble with audio with youtube videos stalling. Sometimes I can select another audio output for a Firefox stream and that will work, but sometimes not. Sometimes playback will resume, but now, with no audio coming through. That is the case at the moment. Kdenlive, which I can usually get to work with external sound card (Zoom H2) via alsa, but now sound not working either. Tried all combinations in Kdenlive's audio output settings. Right now, the only way I can get sound out is from Audacity to Zoom H2 via alsa; however kdenlive wont output sound. I think installing pulseaudio-module-jack has destabilized output to the default built in sound card. I just noticed before that AMS (alsa modular synth) does not create a pcm output when I recall a patch and so does not output sound either. Each time this happens I end up having to restart which allows the internal sound to work again until a couple wake from sleeps.
I wish there was a way to see where the chain is broken. I wish I knew better how to diagnose this.
It seems to be that apps cant obtain resources they need due to conflicts between pulseaudio and other parts of the audio stack. Suspending / restarting pulseaudio used to work but not now. Also getting this response from pulseaudio now...
"GetManagedObjects() failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."
Sometimes get a (audio error) message about bluez. (not using any bluetooth devices).
