The linux-image-extra-... package is maybe missing.

For diagnostic purposes please provide the output of the commands

sudo dpkg --audit
dpkg -l | grep ' linux-'

Seems linked to following bug, for which there is no solution yet:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1636905

I suggest testing sound using kernel version 4.10 or newer (instead of kernel version 4.8.0-58-generic)

If you boot an older kernel is it OK?

zemer (zemer-avital) said : #5

i do not have older kernel installed.

I have mint on usb, and from it the sound card also disappeared.

The link in Mark's response describes my problem well. seems like it is connected to the Del nostro hardware. i had problems with the sound card in the beginning, but after it started to work on the mint on usb, it suddenly worked on ubuntu as well. very strange behaviour. It continued to work well until i installed ubuntu's updates.

i will try again with a fresh install of mint on usb maybe it will work...

If you hold SHIFT at boot, can you not select a different kernel?

zemer (zemer-avital) said : #7

no, i do not have other kernels, i just have advanced boot options and memtest

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said : #8

If there are older kernels available for selection, then they are to be found in "advanced options".

zemer (zemer-avital) said : #9

My mistake, there are indeed some older kernel versions....

so i tried the old kernel versions (4.8.0.56, 4.8.0.54, 4.8.0.36) - none of them worked.

also tried with a new mint on usb - didn't work.

i guess the next step will be to install windows and run the del bios diagnostic tool...

by the way i have a Bluetooth headset and on it the sound works without a problem.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask zemer for more information if necessary.
