Sound card installation ,sound server connection

Asked by griffin

Hi All
I installed my Ubuntu 6.06 few days back and was not able to configure the soundcard .(the volume control icon showed hda intel and Sigmatel STAC9221 A2 as the two devices).
After installing gstreamer plugins the players Totem,Kaffeine seemed to run the songs but no sound appeared(song tracker moved). alsamixer cmd showed the levels as 100 for each. tried for different formats ogg,spx,wav,mp3.........

When i looke up for solution i found this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
And followed the steps 1 cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
                                         2 http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt
                                         3 options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL
                                                    reboot

results 1 Codec: Sigmatel STAC9221 A2
2 searched my card in the Alsa txt and found this
                    STAC9220/9221

3 As my Motherboard is Intel 945 I replaced MODEL with 3stack as asked in the

6.06 is very very old now and even though i think it was an LTS issue i think the time has run out on that now. Please download the newer 8.04 (LTS means longer term support but does have limits) or even better download the much more up-to-date 8.10 and then upgrade in May with everyone else

There's always another distro
http://distrowatch.com/

My personal favourite at the moment is Wolvix
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix

But really the best distro depends on your hardware, peripherals and personal taste. the linux world is very different from the Windows one and it's usually quite possible to find a new up-to-date ultra modern distro that works well on your machine. Using older versions that lack support and that you can't download programs for anymore is not really a good way forwards - in the Windows world it'd be the only option of course but linux likes to keep machines working.

I'm wondering what your machines specs are in terms of Cpu speed, Ram size and hard-drive space? Perhaps we might be able to help but it sounds more like a job for a DistroWatch forum
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20090316&mode=67

Good luck and regards from

I have Intel 945 chipset ,256 mb RAM ,160 GB HDD,2.6 GHz Pentium D.

i wud appreciate if u wud look through the details I have provided ,,If not able to solve then please ask someone to answer it.
As for moving to another distro I use distros which are available through PC magzines as downloading time and charges wud be too much in my region.

It s been a week since I installed Ubuntu and am not able able to enjoy it without music .
I see people getting very detailed answers for their queries and I hope for the same
so Plzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

If it's possible to get some more ram suitable for your machine then that would be a huge help. Ideally 1Gb or 2Gb but even taking it up to 512mb would help. 2.6GHz is pretty awesome and with just a little more ram (perhaps scavenged from someones old machine?) would make this machine really great. There's a few different types of ram but mostly the clue is that if it doesn't fit the slot then it's the wrong sort.

To get a more up-to-date Ubuntu i would recommend Xubuntu because it's a lot lighter and needs a lot less ram. Try this link to get a disc posted to you ;)
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/login
Use the link to make a special request for an Xubuntu disc rather than an Ubuntu one
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/shipit-faq
Visit
http://www.xubuntu.org/get
for more info about Xubuntu

It takes some time to arrive and in the mean-time you might get more music from Wolvix Hunter 1.1.0 (500mb) or even smaller download Cub 1.1.0 (250mb) but don't bother using the torrenting for these - a straight ftp or http download is much faster for these two versions.
http://wolvix.org/get.php
The link has postage places at the top but discs only cost $1 (american, even though its a Norwegian based development team)

Another 2 tiny distros worth trying are a bit techie i think but still have a desktop gui i think. I've used sliTaz and would rather recommend that as i know it has got some good light-weight apps - i'm not sure about TinyCore. The newly created TinyCore weighs in at 10mb download!
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=tinycore
or sliTaz at 30mb but with some good apps
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slitaz

Note that i'm only suggesting sliTaz, Wolvix or TinyCore to fill the time until your Xubuntu discs get there so setting up a small partition and a dual-boot would probably be best, to save losing stuff. Wolvix needs about 8Gb but sliTaz only needs about 1Gb!

Something that might help mitigate the low ram issue is setting up a linux-swap partition of at least 256mb but ideally 512mb, more than that wouldn't improve matters though.

You have a good machine there. Certainly an excellent starting point and worth nudging up a lot with a little more Ram to get a lot more out of that impressive cpu speed!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

The notches in different types of ram are placed differently so you effectively find the ram stick acting a bit like a see-saw and not fully plugging into the slot. If you might be able to get some more ram then we might be able to give more advice about how to fit it yourself although it should be a trivial issue for a computer shop person to do for very little money - if you know a kind one ;)

lol, err kinda but it's worth trying a couple of other things first.  Try rebooting and follow the boot menu Ubuntu item that has "Recovery Mode" at the end.  The "Clear space" and "Repair broken packages" type options are worth running about once a month and after installing stacks of stuff it's a good plan too.

It's also worth exploring the Medibuntu packages and a link i've temporarily mis-placed about fixing your X 'server', doesn't mean server in the way i'd normally mean it.

It is possible to 'reinstall' Ubuntu using the "Manual Partitioning" rather than "Guided" and that allows you to UNtick all the "Format Partition?" column for all the partitions.  If it works then all your good settings and data remain but broken things usually get fixed.  However, it's normal to suffer from the "Ooops" factor (user-error) so it's worth backing up your data before trying anything like this - preferably to an external drive or dvds but often an internal partition to copy your "/home" onto is sometimes good enough.

Good luck and regards from

Hi :)

I was wondering how this is all going? Did youtry out different distros of linux? Did you ever manage to get the Xubuntu and try that instead? Were you able to get more Ram for your machine?

Also have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?

Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask griffin for more information if necessary.
