Headphones don't play audio

Asked by jon do

Hello, I just installed Ubuntu on a partitioned HDD (I'm dual booting with Windows 10). During installation I checked the boxes to install proprietary drivers and even still, couldn't hear out of my headphones from Day 1. When I change the sound output to my monitor, I am able to hear sound but for some reason the audio just won't play out of my headphones. At this point I can't really tell you what I tried -- I pretty much tried everything I found on StackExchange. This post in particular (https://askubuntu.com/a/147603) finally got my headphones to work, even after rebooting, but when I logged into Ubuntu the next day the sound was no longer working and I could not redo it because the config file was still how it should be according to that post. I also uploaded all of the diagnostic info here (http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9ca1989272dcc8cdf2bf2092a3278f7dc82d8b45) like the SoundTroubleshootingProcedure told me to. At this point, anything will help!!! Thanks!
