You'll need to provide the exact model of the laptop and the Kubuntu version you're using.

Also, use a service like http://p.bubash.org to paste the content of the command:

(write this on the terminal) lspci

Then get back to us.

Hi,

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your sound card, please follow this 4-step-procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

aplay -l
cat /dev/sndstat
lspci -nn
lsmod | grep snd
cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec
grep audio /etc/group

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Step 4: Please provide us with the exact model and make of laptop that you are using and post it on this thread

=======================================================================================

Please also read the following pages

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/audio_intel_hda (check for correct /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base options at bottom of this page)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

for some initial suggestions.

You should add the following string to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file

options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL

Valid model names (that replace YOUR_MODEL) depending on the codec chip, can be found at

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-intrepid.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt

In your case, I think YOUR_MODEL should be replaced with auto or acer-aspire

If you do not know your codec chip name, you can execute the following Terminal command to find out:

cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec

Make sure to set all channels to high volume levels in alsamixer EXCEPT for "external amplifier".

If the output of the command

grep audio /etc/group

looks like this:

audio:x:81

or like this:

audio:x:81:pulse

Then replace that audio line with something like this:

audio:x:81:<your login name>

where <your login name> is the username you use to log into Ubuntu

Kind regards,

Mark

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

# Add the following line at the end of the alsa-base file:

options snd-hda-intel model=mobile

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

# Add the following line at the end of the options file:

options snd-hda-intel model=mobile

Reboot pc and retest sound.

If this does not work, please try one of the other models:

You can replace model=mobile with model=laptop or one of the others here:

 AD1884A / AD1883 / AD1984A / AD1984B
   desktop 3-stack desktop (default)
laptop laptop with HP jack sensing
mobile mobile devices with HP jack sensing
   thinkpad Lenovo Thinkpad X300

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

PLEASE could someone help me? I am losing my mind!

I have a HP 6735s laptop and I am struggling with the sound. It plays fine through my speakers, but it has no headphone jack sense. (speakers stay on)

I looked at 'http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-intrepid.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt' and they do not seem to have the module name for my codec

Codec: Analog Devices ID 194a
Codec: Generic 11c1 ID 1040

I have tried

options snd-hda-intel model=mobile
options snd-hda-intel model=hp
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

but the speakers still stay on.

I have only got Master and PCM controls in my volume control (alsamixer). I suspect I should also have headphones, mic, line etc?

Also, is it ok that I add these commands (options snd-hda-intel model=mobile) using nano rather than gedit?

If anyone can help me with this I would be extremely grateful.
