16.04.2 Thinkpad T440s no sound

Asked by Rob Adams

After a routine `sudo apt-get upgrade` and subsequent reboot, I lost all sound output from my speakers. "Sound Preferences" dialog doesn't list laptop speaker or headphone as possible sound devices. It only lists HDMI devices.

I am trying to get sound to come out of my laptop speakers and analog headphone.

I ran also-info.sh with the following result:

Your ALSA information is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=e6e8aa3472ed0a1ca8a046d285af6e2b6c97a16b

In "pavucontrol", only HDMI is listed as an output device. No speakers or headphone jack.

In "alsamixer", I can press F6 to choose between "HDA Intel HDMI" and "HDA Intel PCH".

After random Internet searching, I edited /etc/default/speech-dispatcher, and changed the RUN line to "RUN=no"
