NO SOUND AT ALL - Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex

Asked by VAJINDER

Hi everybody,
I have recently installed dual boot system- XP and Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex on my desktop branded-Siemen - PIII. I have built in" sound card on the motherboard- labelled Crystal CS 4235. There is no option related to sound in bios. But sound is working well with XP.

The first screen after installation I found red mark on volume control icon on the right-top. When I click it it says "The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured"

The following are the terminal output
---------------------------------------------------------------
#aplay -l
aplay: device_list:215: no soundcards found...

I think, Ubuntu is not recognizing my sound card for playback.

Hi,
thanks for the comprehensive information.
Putting aside that there is obviously just a 'snd_cs4236' module, not 'cs4235' (as your soundcard suggests), available, it might only need missing GStreamer plugins. I'd check in Synaptic gstreamer and alsa packages.

After you edit /etc/modules what did aplay -l say?
You may try then:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base
or
sudo alsaconf

Please also check that all settings are consistent and unmuted:
gstreamer-propertiers
gnome-volume-control

Sometimes it helps to add options at the end of
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Example is here:
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt#1539

If anything fails:
quote description of alsa-base in Hardy:
For ALSA to work on a system with a given sound card,
there must be an ALSA driver for that card in the kernel.
Linux 2.6 as shipped in linux-image packages contains
ALSA drivers for all supported sound cards in the form
of loadable modules. For either Linux 2.6 or Linux 2.4
a custom alsa-modules package can be built from the
sources in the alsa-source package using the make-kpkg
utility (included in the kernel-package package). Some
pre-built alsa-modules packages are available in the
Debian archive. Please read the README.Debian file for
information about loading modules.

Hi I think my problem is not so typical, I'm at the edge just want a hint. I hear drum sound at the login screen just after adding snd-cs4236 in the /etc/module file for my sound card Crystal CS 4235. Then I'm unable to understand what happens after login I hear no sound. the output of lspci shows no audio device (I think, It is so because I have built-in sound card )
Output of lspnp -v shows:

Well, I'm not a geek either.
If, as you've mentioned, there is no option in your BIOS to enable built-in souncard, but on XP it's recognized and nevertheless 'lspci' doesn't show an audio device, this really seems inconsistent and worse case scenario would be that Crystal CS 4235 isn't supported.

Please try for some output:
lshw -C sound
##
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav

Hi
One more thing I'd like to add that I get an error message related to acpi ( ACPI: Bios age fails cut off ACPI = Forec required............) during loading kernel in the beginning. I don't know if this is related to sound or not.

Ok, there are several sites for checking out hardware related issues but it might be easier just to try another distro as a LiveCd (try booting up from the Cd without installing the distro. My preference would be for trying out Wolvix as it's non-Debian based, which might tell us something
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribwineution=wolvix

Alternatively the lookup tables are at
http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport
http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/

Good luck and regards form
Tom :)

I think the bios issue is unrelated but it might be good to update the bios anyway. I'm not certain how to find the newer version nor how to flash it into the bios. However, as it's probably unrelated to the sound issue it's probably not urgent.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Doesn't look good to me. Suggest to update BIOS or try to the get ACPI support.

To make the Kernel support ACPI on BIOS versions before 2002 it needs the option:
acpi=force
Edit the menu.lst in this line:
Example:
# defoptions=quiet splash acpi=force

or for one time experience add it at the end of the kernel line which will be booted. (not the recovery mode)

Backup before edit
cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto

However, I'd give LiveCD Jaunty Alpha a chance, my experience with Alpha 5 versions is 100% positive.

after this # defoptions=quiet splash acpi=force, my system crashed and I had to manully edit at the loging prompt to remove the above line.

Oooops, err glad you managed to fix that! Nicely done :)
Do you know either the name and model number of your motherboard or which bios name and version number you are using? I looked up "Crystal CS 4235" but i think that was your sound card?

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Ok, i have done a google search for "Acer V66LT-2N bios download"

http://www.helpdrivers.com/ingles/doc/bios.htm
seems old but does have useful instructions. Where it describes how to make a "start-up disc" it's talking about formatting a floppy disc and installing MsDos system files to make it a bootable disc. This can be done much better by Gparted i think rather than through a Windows OS.

http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/utilities.html

My connection is really slow though so i couldn't check the validity nor hunt around for ones that didn't specify Windows only. I'm not sure about bioses and how seriously restricted they are to one OS - seems really unlikely to me.

I think Sam's really the one that knows most about this despite getting unlucky back there.

Also i think your Cpu speed at 500MHz and only 383Mb Ram i think you're going to be much better off getting Xubuntu as it's a lot lighter on system resources. You can install it using "Manual Partitioning" and make sure all your partitions are UNticked where it says "Format Partitions?". I'd still backup the data by either copying the entire "/home" to a new partition or to dvd's or an external drive or something.
http://www.xubuntu.org/get

Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)

From volume issue we ran into a sum of issues. Result, until they aren't fixed either way we cycle.

#ACPI can make problems on Notebooks with Linux, because of an inaccurate implemented ACPI-table in BIOS (manufacturer side), often translated via Microsoft Compiler and working fault-tolerant with those systems.

There seems to be somethig odd in that last link. The minimum recommended cpu speed for Ubuntu is listed as 700Mhz but for Xuuntu is listed as 800Mhz. I think the one for Xubuntu has got to be a typo or other error. The Xfce desktop it runs is very much lighter than Gnome that Ubuntu uses. 700Mhz sounds a little high for Ubuntu and i'm sure i've had Xubuntu working superbly at much lower cpu speed than than 500Mhz - even from a LiveCd!

I think it would be a good plan to try running Xubuntu from a LiveCd (without installing it to your machine) just to see if you get better results with it than with the Ubuntu you already have installed on your machine.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks Tom and Sam for your attention and contribution,

I have solved my problem. Just what I was saying before that It was not a big problem. I was hearing drum sound before login. But after login There was no sound. What I did to solve this problem is as follows:

Added snd-cs4236 at the bottom of the file '/etc/modules'.

#grep 'audio' /etc/group

I got output: audio:x:29:pulse

#nano /etc/group

and replaced pulse with username ( audio:x:29:username)

Reboot

And I got the splendid sound.

Thanks again.

Congratulation.
btw. in case you like to use pulse, no need to delete pulse, just add username to audio group.
Enjoy Ubuntu
