Hi,
please work through this tutorial, if get stucked please post command and output.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

You may also try to call different applications in a terminal:
gstreamer-properties
##
gnome-volume-control
##
alsamixer

make sure everything is unmuted and settings are consistent in different applications.

Also you may find hints in answers and bug section, plus
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting
http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup

Fine that sound is working, although I don't understand what you mean by
##clicking c-media cmi 8762##

As the page 'troubleshooting' suggests
quote:
Is the system recognizing your sound card?
Open a terminal window, and type "aplay -l"

In ubuntu 10.1 if you right click the volume button and open volume control it will give you a list of what I assume are different audio drivers . when I Open a terminal window, and type "aplay -l" It looks like it sees my mother board audio driver but not my soundcard
