Speakers not working on HP Compaq 2230s, on HP Compaq 6530b, on HP Mini 1035NR, on HP Mini 1000 and on Compaq 615 in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Jinx

I have a HP Compaq 2230s and using Ubuntu Desktop 8.10. Everything works fine, including the sound, just the problem is that there is no sound in the speakers, the headphones work, also the switches are enabled. In Windows XP everything works, also in Ubuntu would work if I would knew how to enable the speakers.

Let me know if u have some ideas... Thanks

Hi,

Please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

wget http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.19.2_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.19.2_all.deb
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

# Add following line at the end of the alsa-base file and then save the change:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

# Enter following command:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

# Add following line at the end of the options file and then save the change:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

Step 3:
Reboot pc

Step 4:Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal" and then enter following command:

gnome-volume-control

and make sure nothing is muted.

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Mark

Mark, thanks for the solution. Worked for me on HP Mini 1000 running 9.04 UNR. Though I had to add the option to /etc/modprode.d/alsa-base.conf vice /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base since /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base did not exist on my netbook, and for that matter neither did /etc/modprobe.d/options, but I created the file with the one-line option anyway.

Bottom line: sound is coming out of my speakers. Thanks much.

Hi, I followed the instrustions to get sound working, but I am having some issues.

I have sound, but no sound icon in the taskbar. I have to use the terminal to get to volume control.

I have to unmute everything every time I restart my computer (as well as mute the pc speaker every time I restart).

And finally, if I plug in a microphone, sound no longer comes out of my speakers.

Could anyone help me out? Thanks!

Worked for me on HP Mini 1035NR

Did a fresh boot.
got the package from www.linuxant.com as stated above
The install process took about 10 minutes no less. I started to think that it froze. Eventually the installed was finished

I did have alsa-base.conf but did not have options file
created empty options file added one line as stated above.

Rebooted

Sound was back and so was the smile on my "punim" :)

This is how my problem started. Upgraded from 8 to 9 and sound was working fine. Then started listening to music through headphones. Eventually at one point sound was only coming from headphones. No sound from built-in speakers. Googled a lot until tried this resolution which worked.

Works also perfectly on Compaq 615 (AMD).

After restart my speaker and pcm always was muted but I found out that the old alsactl ( version 18) still was present in /sbin - after renaming it the notebook now starts up with sound and am very glad to have a completely full working ubuntu on my new iron ;-)

I missed to say that I updated to version

alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.20.3

Have a look here:

And

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

should be

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

After updating run

"sudo which alsactl" to see if there is more than one executable in your paths and remove the wrong one.
More than one alsactl (the older one) caused my soundsettings to be muted on every system start.

HP Pavilion dv5 1135la, Ubuntu 9.04 here.
I installed alsa-driver-linuxant 1.0.18 and now when ubuntu starts, takes A LONG TIME "building modules for the 2.6.28-16-generic kernel, please wait"
Upgraded some crap with the upgrade manager, and it's the same thing, but now it says "...for the 2.6.28-17-generic kernel..."
Downloaded and tried to install alsa driver linuxant 1.0.19 and failed.
I'm sick of this. I'm going to reinstall the whole system.
