Speakers stay on when headphone plugged in in Ubuntu 8.10

Simple enough problem. When I plug in my headphones, they play, but the speakers stay on too. I've seen plenty of fixes about, most of them like this - https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+question/26379 - but none of them fix my problem. I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad y530 with the integrated intel soundcard, and Ubuntu 8.10. Any ideas?
