sound card detected but no sound

i am a new user to ubuntu and dont know much about the operating system but am learning i have installed all updates and system is up 2 date i have ran hardware testing and everything is working ok apart from the sound i have unmuted all settings but still no sound i think the the system has detected sound card but no luck any help would be appreciated thanks

Go to Menu:
System--->Preferences--->Sounds

change to other options on selection boxes, and press "Test",
if work, set all selection boxes to this option,
if dont work, try other option, one of them should work fine.

i have tried what you suggested orignally all options were set to auto detect when i press test i get nothing at all i have tried changing it to all of them and every time i change it and i get an error message that says: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback does this meen audio hardware is detected but not installed properly?i have not installed any drivers at the min every thing has worked on auto detect other than this i have a dell dimension e520 if thats helps at all thanks

lspci | grep udio ; lshw | grep udio ; lsmod | grep ound ; uname -a ; lsb_release --all

problem solved by default tracks left centre and lfe were all muted had to select them to show and unmute problem solved
