no sound on laptop with Ubuntu 8.10
First, I'm pretty new to Ubuntu.
The problem is that sound on my Gateway Solo laptop worked fine with previous installation of Windows XP Professional but since installing Ubuntu, I have not been able to get sound to work at all. Sometimes the icon is crossed out with a red X and sometimes it appears, but in either case, there is no sound - even when the sound mixer is at its highest.
If anyone can help, I would be grateful.

Hopefully it's just one of the many sound channels that has somehow got itself muted or turned right down low. Right-click on the speaker icon by the clock and "Open Volume Control". In the mixer click on the preferences button and add in a few channels at a time to make sure that likely ones aren't muted and try nudging the various levels up quite a lot
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,
If Tom's suggestion does not help, then please try the following PulseAudio configuration guide:
http://
If the PulseAudio procedure does not solve the audio issue, then please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Terminal"
Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line into the Terminal and then hit <enter> after each line)
lspci -nn
lsmod | grep snd
aplay -l
find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd
uname -a
cat /proc/asound/
Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here
Regards,
Mark

Thanks Tom for your suggestion. I wish it was as easy as that :-)
Mark: I followed the instructions on the link - this is what I received after following through parts A and C and then following instructions in appendix A:
