Low distorted Volume on ThinkPad S540 speakers

Asked by Solomon Nadar

The sound volume on my ThinkPad S540 is really low and is distorted too. It works fine through headphones and on Windows 10.

I have run the alsa-info script and it uploaded to http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=2cf0bfd3dfc7f3c9d155bd45e55691ff7800225e

Currently, I have had to use headphones or boot to Windows to watch any YouTube videos. Any idea what might be the issue? I am using Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS.

If you run:

alsamixer

Does changing the levels make any difference?

I selected HDA Intel PCH and the Master, Speaker, PCM values are set to 100 already. But that hasn't helped.
Not sure if there is a way to increase some settings on the HDMI or if the HDMI is used at all.

What about lower levels?

Do you mean if there is a distortion at lower levels? Yes, there is a slight distortion at lower volumes. But the entire volume is so low when I keep at something like 80 that I have to really concentrate to hear a sound.

Not sure if it helps, but the laptop speakers are by JBL.
