Speakers not playing sounds, headphones playing high pitch whine

Asked by Sean Aubin

My sound tends to not work. I have an almost clean install of Ubuntu 16.10 with the Linux 4.10 kernel.

When I reboot my speakers and unmute them, they let out a loud popping noise. When I then plug in my headphones and unmute them, they emit a loud high-pitched constant tone.

Sometimes when I reboot my computer, my sound does work and I don't know why.

I do not have the same problem on my Windows 10 installation on the same computer.

I went through, as best as I could, the Ubuntu sound troubleshooting instructions and have accumulated the relevant outputs in this pastebin: http://pastebin.com/LfE9eNGp

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help or if I should try to get more information.

Do you get sound if you use the Ubuntu kernel rather than one you found online?

Do you mean using 4.8 instead of 4.10?

Yes. Why did you install the 4.10 kernel?
