No sound presen in speakerst; have linux driver, don't know how to install

Asked by harderson02

Newly installed hardware so I figured I would also switch operating systems. Currently installed Ubuntu 8,04. I am unable to get the sound to work. My mother board is a ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe. From the manual it states that the Audio is: ADI Ad2000B 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC. I tried looking up some more information online, and it stated that this was a SoundMax device, but I haven't been able to find out much more information. I have no idea what the chip is? The CD that came with the mother board has Linux drivers on the board, but I have not figured out how to correctly install them, or if that is needed. The Linux driver is alsa-driver-1.0.16, if that helps. My headphones work, but not my speakers.

Here is what I get from the terminal:
aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

This is my first time trying Linux, so any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I tried out the guide and was able to install everything, however, I am still unable to hear any sound from my speakers. One thing I did notice was that at the end of the installation it said that the ALSA mixer was muted by default. I typed alsamixer into terminal but did not see anything muted. Could this be my problem? I am still stuck.

My headphones are working, so does that mean the audio driver is working? Thank you!

I installed an old Creative Live sound card and then everything was recognized immediately. The only thing I had to do was to go to SYSTEM:PREFERENCES:SOUND; then I changed everything from AutoDetect to Multichannel Playback and I changed the Device setting to SBLive! Value. After that, I was able to test the sound and heard everything. Thanks for those of you who tried to help. I never did figure out how to get sound from my Motherboard, but at this point, it is a non-issue.

Hi harderson02, could you please tell me at what level this motherboard is compatible with ubuntu? What are the working components and what are not working?

So far, everything has worked except for the sound. The USB cables, and Fire-wire ports are working. The microphone even works well. It is really only the SPDIF out that does not work.

Perhaps release 2.6.28 of the Linux kernel will correct the problem.
