Asked by Daniel Paul

Hello,

I have just installed Ubuntu on my Gateway Notebook Model 7322GZ. Everything is working great except the sound does not work at all. This is my first try with Ubuntu so I am not sure what to do. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rolando,

I put all volumes all the way up, and I tried to play mp3, mpg, audio CD, also ran sound test, and still no sound at all.
I also tried to restart the system, this had no effect either.

Thanks,

Dan

Well daniel, plz try this command

    sudo alsactl store

I found that if you have a:

Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller

And have this kind of problem, can be fixed just with this command.

Please let me know if works!

Plz, try this:

sudo alsactl restore && sudo alsactl store && sudo alsa reload && sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

when finish then type, cut and paste here

    lspci -v && lspci -nv && tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat && amixer -c0

If this don't work we may think in compile the last alsa, alsa drivers and alsa mixer

Ok, I saw the proble (i think) is the firmware of your card, to fix it just:

First, download and install the latest versions of Alsa-driver, Alsa-lib, and Alsa-utils. You can find them here.

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

Then follow these instructions. They are ubuntu specific. They also go into detail on how to install the new versions of Alsa, and what files to edit and exactly how.

Thank you for your time and effort. I am having some trouble installing those items you had me download. I am new to this and dont fully understand these installation procedures. They downloaded fine and went into an archive. I looked at the installation instruction and found them to be vague. I will continue reading, and I will look at that last site you offered. If you think of anything further, I would greatly appreciate it.

I will go without sound before I go back to windows! All I ever got was a blue screen time and time again.

A Thousand Thanks,
Dan

I have awesome news I got the sound working.

I went here http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-75045.html and followed these simple instructions

To all you guys struggling with the Conexant AC-Link Audio audio card. Phantom, a friend who has a Gateway Laptop (7330GZ model). In his quest of moving Ubuntu to his laptop (not just his desktop). He was able to cure his no sound blues on his laptop by doing the following:

1. Open up the volume control.

2. Go to Edit.

3. Go to Preferences.

4. Scroll down list to Extrenal Amplifier. (check it)

5. Once it is check - close that out.

6. Go back to the volume control panel.

7. You should now see a Switches TAB at top. (select it)

8. Search for the External Amplifier on the list you see.

9. Uncheck the External Amplifier.

10. Now close out and go test your sound.

Phantom and I hope this will help everyone who is having no sound issues with the Conexant AC-Link Audio.

*Please understand that it is very hard to cover every nook and cranny with all the items that Linux covers, especially when the main maufactures of these devices don't help out much if any with the creation of drivers or software for linux.

A big thanks to the very hard working Open Source community, because of them, we are able to benefit with such a great OS like Linux. Share or help when you can!

Thanks for all of your efforts. I am excited to have a fully functional Linux OS on my Gateway.

Dan
