Thanks to Daniel's question and your answer, the output of lspci shows that you have two sound devices listed:

1. 00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)
2. 01:09.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)

Your computer is getting two messages as to which one to use so you need to go into your BIOS and disable the "onboard" sound device which is the AC'97 Audio Controller.

After you have done that both of your systems will use the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 by default.

Andre,

I went ahead and went into my BIOS. Under Integrated Peripherals there is three things that I disabled.
1. Onboard LAN Controller
2. Onboard LAN Option ROM
3. AC97 Controller

All three were enabled-went ahead and disabled them. I went into Windows and sound was still on.
Then rebooted, went to Ubuntu and still no sound =(

I did pick up on something-In Ubuntu when you clcik on the speaker and you see the button.....when you muse the button it says its the Treble! Something is not right.
Thanks again for your input.

I had a very similar problem on my old motherboard with upgraded soundcard. I also disabled on-board sound in BIOS, to no avail. What worked for me was manually disable the on-board sound with the motherboards jumper settings. The jumper that needs changing, and the process of doing so, should be written and explained in the documentation booklet that came with your motherboard/system. If you do not have said booklet, there should be the required information on the website of your boards manufacturer.

Big Dave,

Thanks for your suggestion. I hate messing with jumpers. If the
hardware works with Windows, it should work with Ubuntu.
The funny thing is that when you launch Ubuntu and mouse over the
volume knob it says Treble?? Something is just not right System
wise.....
I am amazed as to how fast the system launches and how much quicker it is....
Im not into gaming anymore. I want to use it for email, spreadsheet ,
interenet videos/some music and docs....I have all with ubuntu except
SOUND!!

I want to leave windows for good. I hate what they stand for and
where they are going with their system. Windows is starting to remind
me of AOL software......bulky and useless....
I heard of Mint. Was thinking of trying that one.
I do appreciate your input Big D! =)

Leaving the onboard LAN on in the BIOS won't do any harm. I prefer to use a separate ethernet card.

As to your sound, or absence of it, the loudspeaker icon on your top panel will give you access to Preferences and the ALSA mixer controls via a right click.

There are also, under System, Preferences (top panel left), Sound, under Devices, various configuration and testing options.
For Device, mine reads "Dell Sound Blaster Live! (Alsa mixer)" which is how Ubuntu identifies the Creative Labs SB Live!

The next tab "Sounds", has two boxes at the top. Tick both of them and then Close.

Then press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to reset your GUI.

If all that achieves nothing, you might have to re-install.

The "Treble" on mouseover of the speaker iconI have never seen. It should say "Master".

I FINALLY have volume!! =) Im thinking maybe a bad Download. That 3kb per sec stinks! Means many people are installing it?

Special thanks to Daniel, Andre & Big Dave for helping me.
